Biogénie Europe, a subsidiary of EnGlobe (Canada), one of the world’s leading environmental service companies, has begun construction on its new soil processing and repurposing centre in French Ardennes (in Chalandry-Elaire), called SOLutions Nord-Est.

The first soil will be welcomed on the site, which is next to the semi-public company Arcavi, in mid-July. The site will be fully operational come the autumn.

Specialising in the treatment of polluted soil, on site or in its processing centres, Biogénie Europe works both with public and private players (decontaminators, civil engineering, consultancy firms, industrialists, etc.). Wherever there may be soil pollution (because of solvents, hydrocarbons, heavy metals, etc.), Biogénie uses its expertise to analyse, to establish a plan of action and to carry out rehabilitation and processing.

SOLutions Nord-Est will have several technologies available as part of its platform:

  • Bioprocessing (for hydrocarbons): digestion of pollutants by micro-organisms
  • Soil Washing (for heavy metals): extraction of valuable components (sand, gravel) to reduce the polluted fraction to a sludge which will be removed via an approved channel
  • Thermal desorption (for tar-derived organic pollutants): heating soils to remove and process contaminants

This has multiple benefits. This makes it possible to repurpose treated soil by making available recycled materials (sand, gravel) as an alternative to burial and incineration.

Supported by the Ardennes’ Departmental Board and by Ardennes Développement, Biogénie Europe has also created a strong relationship with the semi-public company Arcavi. Some of the treated soil will be recovered by Arcavi, which provides opportunities for one company and supplies for the other.

At full capacity, the site will be able to treat 60,000 tonnes of soil per year. This represents an investment of 3.5 million euros and the creation of 5 direct jobs over 3 years, along with twenty indirect jobs.

By creating this centre in the Ardennes, Biogénie Europe is pursuing its expansion strategy in France to be closer to its customers. The Ardennes site will cover several departments, encompassing Metz, Nancy, Bar-le-Duc, Troyes, Reims, Laon and Valenciennes. It complements the 3 existing sites (2 in Ile-de-France, 1 in the Lyon region).

Moreover, having just launched in French Ardennes, Biogénie Europe has shown its desire for long-term commitment to the region by becoming a partner of the 2017 edition of Le Cabaret Vert, which will take place from 24 to 27 August in Charleville-Mézières.
