The Port of Givet: a low-carbon solution for your transport needs
Less energy-intensive than road transport, river transport has considerable potential in France thanks to its extensive network of navigable waterways. In French Ardennes, the Port of Givet, with its many services and facilities, provides links via the Meuse to European ports (Antwerp, Liège, and Rotterdam).
A true multimodal platform (water, rail and road), the Port of Givet has three hubs and three docks, including 1,450 m of container quay (43,200 m² of storage areas, including 3,700 m² of covered buildings). It has rail links and is close to the Belgian motorways and the A34/A304. Completely free of charge, this alternative to the A1 (passing through Paris) and the A31 (passing through Luxembourg), which can sometimes be difficult to navigate, should enable the region to position itself as the new French transport hub for Northern Europe's major roads.
Since 2022, the Ardennes Chambre of Commerce, which owns the port, has delegated its management to a subsidiary of the URANO group, a local public works company. This alliance has led to partnerships with Truck Location, which has a fleet of 100% biofuel trucks. Thanks to these partnerships and the investments made in recent years (re-commissioning of the rail line, development work, acquisition of handling equipment, etc.), the port is able to offer comprehensive solutions tailored to the transport of goods.
The Port of Givet is also accessible to large barges with a capacity of 1,350 tonnes, equivalent to 50 lorries. A reliable means of transport (with few accidents), river transport emits two to five times less CO₂ than road transport, helps relieve road traffic congestion and reduces nuisance.
In line with the current context, the Port of Givet is resuming its strategic role (it was France's leading river port in the 1960s) for French Ardennes economy.
